Care guide
Make your furniture last
Help preserve both appearance and durability for years to come.
Teak Furniture Care
Teak is a natural material that develops a silver-grey patina over time when exposed to the elements. This does not affect durability. To maintain the original warm tone, apply teak oil or protector periodically. Clean regularly with mild soap and water using a soft brush or cloth. Avoid high-pressure cleaning, as it can damage the wood surface. During winter or extended periods of non-use, we recommend covering or storing your furniture in a dry, sheltered area.
Aluminium Furniture Care
Aluminium furniture is lightweight, rust-resistant, and requires minimal maintenance. Clean with a soft cloth and mild soapy water to remove dirt and dust. Avoid abrasive sponges or harsh chemicals, as they may damage the surface finish. Although weather-resistant, using a cover during harsh weather will help preserve the appearance over time.
Polyrattan / Synthetic Rattan Care
Polyrattan is a durable and weather-resistant material designed for outdoor use. Clean with water and a soft brush or cloth. For deeper cleaning, mild soap can be used. Avoid harsh chemicals. While UV-resistant, long-term exposure to extreme weather can affect appearance, so covering or storing when not in use is recommended.
Linen (fabric)
Linen is a natural, breathable material that offers a soft and relaxed look. Vacuum regularly to remove dust and dirt. Clean with a damp cloth and mild soap for small stains. Avoid soaking the fabric. Removable covers can be washed at low temperatures (follow care label). Always air dry. Protect from prolonged moisture and store cushions dry when not in use.
Acacia Wood
Acacia is a strong hardwood with a warm tone. Clean with mild soap and water. Dry thoroughly after cleaning. To prevent cracking or fading, treat with wood oil periodically. We recommend covering or storing during wet or cold seasons.
Rattan (natural)
Natural rattan is best suited for covered outdoor areas or indoor use. Clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid excessive moisture, as it can weaken the material. Keep away from direct rain and store in a dry environment to maintain durability.
Rope
Outdoor rope is durable and designed to withstand weather conditions. Clean with water and a soft brush. Mild soap can be used if needed. Avoid sharp objects that may damage the fibers. Allow to dry fully after cleaning.
Water-Resistant Cushions
Water-resistant fabrics repel light rain and moisture but are not fully waterproof. Clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid machine washing unless specified. Store cushions in a dry place during heavy rain or when not in use to prevent moisture buildup.

Our History
The aha moment
The idea for Design Within Reach came to founder Rob Forbes in 1998, when he tried to furnish his apartment with the clean, simple classics he’d come to appreciate while living in London. He discovered that works by designers such as the Eameses, Le Corbusier and Saarinen were “out of reach” for anyone who didn’t know the secret handshake or have the patience to wait months for delivery.

Realizing there had to be a better way, Rob and a small team bought 20 containers of inventory, mailed a catalog and waited for the phone to ring. (It didn’t for 24 hours, until we realized that we’d accidentally left the answering service on.)

Architects, interior designers, and the general public responded immediately, and to our surprise, so did the brands that Rob had struggled to get his hands on just months earlier. One of the first brands to appreciate our approach was the Michigan-based company Herman Miller. Within a year of launching, we were bringing the Eames Lounge Chair, Aeron Chair, and many other Herman Miller favorites directly to retail customers across the country via catalog – for the first time ever.
